Major incident drill set for local airport
The Loveland Fire and Rescue Department will stage a
major incident exercise the morning of Oct. 9 at the Fort
Collins/Loveland Airport. The drill will simulate a jetliner situation
and involve multiple northern Colorado public safety, health and service
agencies.
The chain of events will begin about 8:30 a.m. and
conclude about 12:30 p.m. The incident simulation will not involve real
aircraft and will be situated away from the airport’s runway. The
airport will remain open for normal operations.
Fire suppression, hazardous materials and mass casualty situations will
all be encountered during the drill.
A full-scale incident drill at least every three years
is required for Federal Aviation Authority certification of a public
airport. The scope of the drill must be in conjunction with the largest
type of aircraft permissible at the airport. The Fort Collins/Loveland
Airport currently supports commercial jetliners that seat 160
passengers.
In addition to the fire department, the drill will
likely include participation by police, SWAT, sheriff’s department,
ambulance, hospitals and other area agencies. Special observers will
assist and later participate in a follow-up meeting and critique leading
to an after-action report summarizing the event with suggestions for any
future improvements.
Agencies invited to participate include Loveland Fire
and Rescue, Loveland Police, Thompson Valley Emergency Medical Services,
Poudre Valley Ambulance, Berthoud Fire Department, Windsor Fire
Department, Poudre Fire Authority, Union Colony Fire Authority, McKee
Hospital, Poudre Valley Hospital, Larimer County Emergency Management,
Larimer County Sheriff’s Department, Thompson School District, Allegiant
Air.
