Technology that helps people with disabilities is called Assistive Technology. Assistive Technology can often help suppplement an individual's abilities to help them achieve the requirements of a job, hlep them in a classroom, or assist them in independent living or recreational activities.
There are several organizations that can help you identify the appropriate technology necessary for a specific situation. Here are a few major contacts:
The Job Accommodation Network (JAN), www.janweb.icdi.wvu.edu, is a free service of the Office of Disability Employment Policy, US Department of Labor.
Closing the Gap, www.closingthegap.com, is a bi-monthly publication, an annual conference. Their website has thousands of assistive technology products, and has an excellent search tool.
Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA), www.resna.org, is primarily a resource on mobility, but they have been expending their focus in recent years.
