Fire Station 5, located at 251 Knobcone Drive, was constructed in 1998. The building’s most pressing deficiencies include:

• Undersized dayroom, kitchen and sleeping quarters
• Lack of apparatus bay space (no drive-thru bays)
• Lack of adequate ancillary space to support the apparatus bays
• Ineffective decontamination area
• Inadequate bunker storage
• Workout area not isolated from diesel exhaust
• Aging mechanical systems, roofing, door
hardware, overhead doors and electrical systems
The fire station would remain at the existing site and would increase in size from 4,512 to approximately 10,000 square feet.

The updated station would include:
• Apparatus bay areas
• An area for vehicle maintenance and the maintenance and support of emergency response equipment
• Training area
• Administrative space
• Dorm rooms, day room, fitness area and bathrooms
• Kitchen
• Lobby
The proposed improvements would enhance internal response
times, promote separation of industrial maintenance spaces from residential spaces, and provide flexibility to address future advancements in firefighting technology.
