Street sweeping is one of the most visible aspects of the Storm
Drainage Division for citizens as well as the traveling public.
Clean streets and gutters not only give the City an overall
clean appearance they reduce traffic accidents and
air pollution caused by dirt and debris accumulations. Most Cities maintain a street
sweeping program to comply with provisions of the federally
mandated Clean Water Act. It
is important to sweep up as much debris as possible to
keep pollutants from entering the storm se wer
system because of discharge into local streams and rivers. Last year the
City of Loveland hauled 773 cubic yards
of dirt and debris from street sweepings to the landfill,
approximately 130 truck loads.

The Storm Drainage Division currently operates four street
sweepers full time and shares one sweeper with
the Streets Division. The Storm Drainage Crew is responsible for
sweeping over 176 curb miles of arterial streets (12
times a year), and over 500 curb miles of collector and
residential streets (6 times a year). The downtown district is swept
20
times
during the year at night. Other sweeping
responsibilities include sweeping for the sculpture show,
parades/foot races, citizen complaints, traffic accidents, and
spills in the road way.
